Research and Monitoring Manager
Are you passionate about research and evidence-based advocacy? We’re looking for an experienced, dynamic Research and Monitoring Manager to take our work forward in this important year for international development.
The role:
This is an exciting and fast-paced senior role, leading Publish What You Fund’s research and monitoring activities. It involves managing a small team to design and deliver research and monitoring materials, including the annual Aid Transparency Index – our flagship product. The job includes contributing to the organisation’s strategic planning; analysing aid policies and data; writing analytical reports and briefings; and overseeing the development of tools to facilitate our advocacy and open data work. The successful candidate will be confident combining data literacy with outreach and networking in the open data, aid effectiveness and transparency communities.
This is a full-time position based in London and occasional travel is required.
Salary: £30-37,000 (depending on experience)
Core responsibilities:
1. Leadership and coordination of research and monitoring strategy: Responsible for developing, managing and implementing Publish What You Fund’s research and monitoring strategy, including managing a small team, liaising with external consultants and managing the workstream budget.
2. Contribute to overall strategic and financial planning as part of the Senior Management Team: Including contributing to the development of the organisation’s strategy and funding plans, representing the organisation in meetings with funders, leading on specific bids and working with the Finance Manager on the research and monitoring budget.
3. Coordination with the advocacy and communications team: Working closely on the production and dissemination of the Aid Transparency Index and providing other research and policy analysis for use in advocacy and communications work.
4. Establish partnerships and networking with relevant organisations in the open data, development effectiveness and transparency communities: Liaising with partners, policy makers and research organisations on research and monitoring work, ensuring that key partners remain engaged with the issues.
Essential requirements:
1. Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in research, policy or monitoring and evaluation roles – including stakeholder management.
2. Ability to develop and deliver research projects on time and on budget.
3. Experience of at least one of the following agendas: aid transparency; aid/development effectiveness; government transparency; open data; or freedom of information.
4. High level of data and IT literacy, including experience of using spreadsheets and working with data sets.
5. Excellent analytical skills and concise writing style, including confidence in relating research findings and statistical analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences.
6. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
7. Strong interpersonal skills: confidence, diplomacy and fluency when interacting with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
8. Ability to plan, manage and implement projects, including prioritisation, identifying possible risks and troubleshooting problems in a timely and professional manner.
Desirable requirements:
1. Experience with primary data collection and research projects
2. Experience of managing, training and mentoring a small team
3. Successful budget planning and fundraising
4. Working knowledge of languages other than English
5. Experience of working with civil society campaigns and research organisations
6. Experience of working in or with developing countries
